If you’re the parent of a junior player, the chances are probably that you want them to practice as much as possible, so that they can do their best in the real matches. However, overuse injuries are common among tennis players who practice too often. How much is too much when your junior tennis player is on the court, and how can you help them prevent common overuse injuries?

Practice Time

You can’t prevent your child from getting on the court, and you can’t force them too either. While there’s no set amount of practice time your junior tennis player should be putting in every week, their court time can only be dictated by their own desires. If your player is practicing for long and hard sessions, but only about once a week, that can be just as beneficial as your player practicing for an hour every night. Defer to how your player wants to practice– after all, they’re the only person who knows how they can get better.

Preventing Practice Injuries

Too much time on the court, however, can lead to overuse injuries. You can help your child stay away from overuse injuries by encouraging them to both warm up and cool down before and after practice. Neither of these activities will take much time, but they’ll work wonders on your child’s performance in practice.

Keeping Your Player Safe And On The Court

It doesn’t really matter how much time a day your child spends practicing. That amount varies depending on how often and how heavily you’re practicing, so parents of junior tennis players don’t really need to stress about how much practice their child is getting. Instead, you should be ensuring that your child is practicing, and that they’re being safe and aware while they’re on the court. Ensure that they know several preventative measures so that your child doesn’t give themselves an overuse injury, and they’ll be ready for their next match as soon as you know!
