Three Drills To Help You Make Your On-Court Performance Better

As a beginning tennis player, it’s likely that you’re not sure of the right way to practice. However, there are several easy drills to help improve your game. Take a look at three options you can use now.

 

The Junk It Drill

Tennis expert John Cavill believes if you’re having trouble with creating a rhythm on the court, or even having trouble switching between different kinds of shots, this drill is for you. In the Junk It Drill, you need to be playing against an opponent. Both of you will stand at either end of the court, but in order to score points, you need to complete either a drop shot or a lob. To make it even harder, you can’t complete the same type of shot twice in a row! This drill relies on unpredictability and a good knowledge of how to perform these shots, so it’s perfect for beginners to practice their skills with.

 

The Changing Spin Drill

If you struggle to apply spin to your shots, this drill is for you! In the Changing Spin Drill, you need an opponent. Both of you stand at either end of the court, diagonal from each other. So if your opponent is on the right side of the court, you need to be on the left. To play, you need to complete three rounds. In the first round, the server must only slice on their serve and ground strokes, while the receiver can only hit a topspin on their ground strokes. In the second round, the server can hit topspin on their serve and ground strokes, while the receiver has to hit a slice on their ground strokes. In the third round, the server must apply a spin to every shot- and the receiver has to hit the opposite spin back. This is a great drill for beginners trying to work on their spin shots, and can be useful when preparing for a match.

 

The Frying Pan Drill

Tennis Companion writer Jon Crimm believes the Frying Pan Drill is a great way to practice your hand-eye coordination before a match. To begin, hold your racquet face-up, like you would a frying pan. Place a tennis ball on the strings, and start bouncing it up and down like a paddleball. This drill is a great way for beginners to start learning how to handle both their racquet and their ball, and while it may sound easy, it’s actually more difficult than you think!
