Are you ready to step onto the tennis court again and ensure the final score is in your favor this match? Tennis is a dynamic and exhilarating sport that challenges your physical abilities, mental acuity, and strategic thinking. Even beginners know that tennis is not just about hitting a ball back and forth. Instead, it’s as much about mindset as physical ability. Before you step onto that court again, think about these critical points.

  1. Play Loose: Approach every match with ease, allowing your arm and body to relax. The moment you step onto the court, assess your body for any signs of tension. If you feel tight, concentrate on loosening your wrist initially, which often leads to overall relaxation throughout the arm. When feeling especially tense or anxious, try taking a deep breath and tensing your shoulders briefly, then release them as you exhale. Keep in mind that the power in your shots comes from the speed of your swing rather than using excessive force.
  2. Remember to Breathe: Conscious breathing can help promote relaxation and reduce stress on the tennis court. By taking slow, deep breaths, you’ll enter a relaxed state that can help you focus your attention and concentrate on your game strategy, improving decision-making and shot execution. More than that, though, in tennis, breathing can contribute to the timing and rhythm of your strokes. Coordinating the exhale with the exertion of hitting the ball can enhance timing and add fluidity to the swing. This synchronization can help you find a rhythm and generate power in their shots, resulting in better control and accuracy.
  3. Think About Where You Want the Ball to Be: During every single point, don’t focus on the mechanics of your stroke. Instead, think about your intention. Where do you want that ball to end up? Watch the ball coming to you, think about where you want it to be, and just move. Too much thought into every stroke is exhausting and will damage your ability to play well.
