What are the Tennis Levels?

Your tennis level is essentially the skill level at which you can play right now. It is not only a good way to determine who you should play in an upcoming match, but also what kind of lessons in which to enroll. Understanding skill level is absolutely key to bettering your game. Enroll in lessons that are at a level that is too high, and your body may not be ready to respond. Select a level that is too low, and you may not be able to advance your game. So, what do those skill levels really look like?

Beginner or Novice Level

In lessons like these, you’re not going to be expected to know very much. You may never have played before, and even if you have, you’re unlikely to know the shots and tactics necessary to really win. What you do need at this point isn’t knowledge, but a willingness to learn more. You’ll also need a very basic fitness level so you can move on the court. During lessons or coaching sessions at the novice level, you will likely gain an understanding of basic shots like the forehand and backhand, as well as the rules of the game. You may work on returning shots, simple match tactics, and your serve.

Intermediate Level

Tennis here is quite a bit different from that at the novice level. To move forward, you need to be able to hold a small rally, serve, and begin a point. At the intermediate level, tennis lessons will focus on refining your technique. Often serving is the focus so you can consistently hit the ball. You’ll work to master things like your topspin, and you’ll develop some tactical techniques you can use on the court. This is the perfect time to enter into some match play with others so you can continue to develop your skills and strategy.

Advanced Level

To get here, you’ve probably been playing tennis for at least a year. You should have mastered many shots, and you should have plenty of confidence when you walk on the court. Your serve will be fairly accurate, and you can hold a long rally. Every match will be as much about your skills as it is about strategy. In lessons like these, you can expect an analysis of your current technique and a breakdown of your shots so you know what to improve on from week to week.
