If you’re just getting started in the world of tennis, you may be playing regularly on public tennis courts. Unlike private courts, where the rules are usually incredibly strict, public courts tend to have very loose guidelines that govern their usages. Understanding what those guidelines may be, though, can help make your next trip to the courts a bit more successful. While every set of public courts have different rules, these are the most common.

Tennis Only!

Most public courts have specific rules against other sports using the space. Bicycles, skateboards, roller skates, and roller blades are typically forbidden on these courts.

No Food, No Pets

Most public courts also expressly forbid food and beverages. A sticky spill on the court could affect everyone’s ability to enjoy the space, which is why it’s usually not a good idea to take anything besides water inside the fence. Pets are also typically forbidden.

Shoes Required!

You’ll certainly want a good pair of tennis shoes to play, and most courts have suggested non-marking rubber soles are the best kind. Moreover, many tennis courts suggest that playing without shoes is just not a good idea.

Be Nice!

You should always plan to observe common tennis courtesies while you’re on public courts. The rules of tennis should apply from the moment you step on the court, and while you should take the time you need to finish your match, you should also make sure everyone else has access to the court. If other players are waiting, limit your playing time to an hour or two.

Tournaments

If you’d like to host a tournament, it’s a great way to attract and meet other players, but do so only with permission from the city or area that manages the courts. You shouldn’t simply assume it’s okay to host a tournament without notifying those in charge.
