Tennis is one game where you’re likely to be across the court continuously. From running to catch that ball to making sure you’re in the right position at all times, you’re going to move if you’re playing tennis. Looking for a quick way to improve your game? Think about your stride. In most cases, smaller steps are going to be the right option over longer strides on the court. 

 

Why Small Steps Work

In tennis, it’s all about balance. If you’re using longer strides to get to the ball, you’re going to be stretching your entire body out. That can change the way you balance, and it makes it harder to actually get to the ball. Smaller steps, though, mean continually adjusting your balance while you’re on the court. That will mean you stay consistently balanced throughout the match. While you may not always have time to take smaller steps, the reality is that you’ll be able to better adjust to the incoming ball if you do, which will mean a better return shot. 

 

An Added Benefit

Small steps can give you one more benefit. If you’re playing in windy conditions, the ball may not move like you think it should. Taking several small steps as the ball tracks toward you, though, means you can avoid problems with the ball moving too far away as the wind pushes it. Longer strides mean you have less time to anticipate the ball’s movement, and that can spell disaster for your overall game. Fortunately, those tiny steps mean you’re prepared for the ball, even when it has a funny bounce thanks to weather conditions. 

 

Working smaller steps into your game can be frustrating, but it’s entirely possible if you do it a bit at a time. It will take some getting used to, especially if you tend to have a longer natural stride, but it will be worth it when you start racking up the wins.
