Tennis Serve Variations: Adding Spin and Power
Posted in: Blog | Published on: October 2, 2023 | Written By: adminWhile tennis is a great sport for anyone, the reality is that it is not a one-size-fits-all sport, especially when it comes to your serve. Every point is a bit like a battle of strategy, and that means every serve you make has to be carefully considered. Not sure how to make those serve variations happen? Take a look.
Shifting the Spin
When you change your spin, you actually gain control over the placement and trajectory of your serve. What are some types of serves that change the spin? A topspin serve creates a downward curve as it flies across the court so the bounce is far higher. If you’re trying to hit the corners of the service box, this is the right choice.
You can also try a backspin serve. With this type of serve, the ball will make a low, wide skid which is ideal when you’re serving to either right-handed or left-handed players.
A flat serve can have a similar effect. If you’re looking for speed, this is the spin you want, particularly if you’re aiming right at your opponent.
Adding Power
If you’re looking to add power to your serve, start with the correct stance: The platform stance (feet shoulder-width apart) or pinpoint stance (front foot slightly ahead) can provide a solid base for power. You can use a pinpoint stance for added hip rotation and power generation. Either way, ensure proper weight transfer from the back foot to the front foot during the motion.
Additionally, you’ll want to adopt a continental grip for more power. This grip allows you to hit both flat serves and spin serves effectively.
