Training For Your First Tournament – A Quick Guide
Posted in: Blog | Published on: March 6, 2023 | Written By: adminThousands of people train for tennis tournaments each year, and once you’ve reached a playing level of at least 2.5, you’re ready to start playing. How do you even begin to prepare for an event like that one, though? These tips can help make it happen.
- Don’t Go in with Predictions: If you go in expecting to win, you’re not going in with a learning mindset. Instead, prepare the best way you know how, then go in to learn what your tournament game will look like, your own personal strengths on the court in that setting, and what your weaknesses may be. Additionally, you’ll begin to build opponent awareness at a completely different level. Learning under pressure is so different from learning in a teaching setting, and without your predictions in mind, you’ll actually be able to accept some of that knowledge.
- Practice Matches Matter: Tournaments can be about knowing how to win simple points, but you’re not going to get there in lessons. Instead, practice during as much match play as possible, trying to earn point after point.
- Play Often: You should be playing at least twice a week in the month before the tournament. The more you train, the more likely you are to understand what will and will not go well on the court on tournament day, and that can help build your confidence and send you off on the right foot.
